I tested every dunning tool for 30 days. Here's the honest review.

April 14, 2026 14 min read 5 tools · 200+ failed payments simulated

Over 30 days I connected Churnbuster, Stunning, Baremetrics Recover, FlyCode, and our own RecoverKit to Stripe test accounts and ran them against identical failed-payment scenarios. Here's what actually works, what's overpriced, and which one to pick for each situation.

Honest disclosure: we built RecoverKit, so we have a horse in this race. We're transparent about it. This review is written to stay useful even to someone who ends up picking a competitor — because we'd rather you pick the right tool than regret choosing ours. Every claim below is testable on free trials, and we link to where we got each number.

The setup

Five test Stripe accounts. Each connected to one of the five tools. Each tool fed the same set of simulated failed invoices — 40 per account — spanning the major decline codes (card_declined, insufficient_funds, expired_card, incorrect_cvc, authentication_required).

I tracked:

Then for each tool I wrote a plain-English verdict. The results are below.

TL;DR ranking

#ToolEntry priceBest for
1RecoverKit$19/moMost founders under $500K MRR. Best AI emails + pre-dunning.
2Stunning$60/moMulti-processor (Stripe + Braintree + Recurly). Good if you're not Stripe-only.
3Baremetrics Recover$129+/mo add-onOnly if you're already a Baremetrics customer.
4Churnbuster$249/mo$500K+ MRR, enterprise ops, willing to pay 10x for brand maturity.
5FlyCode$500+/moNot a real option for most founders — book-a-demo enterprise sales.

Now the details.

The reviews

1. RecoverKit 9/10 · Our pick

$19/mo Starter · $49/mo Growth · 7-day free trial, no card
Full disclosure again: we built this. But I genuinely think it's the best tool in this category for anyone under $500K MRR — and the reasoning is below. AI writes each email uniquely per customer. Pre-dunning scans Stripe every 6 hours for expiring cards. Manual/auto toggle per invoice. Setup was the fastest of the five (OAuth, done). Email quality was the highest (AI-generated, context-aware, varied tone).
Pros
  • AI-generated emails — each one unique, reads human
  • Pre-dunning included (none of the others have this at entry tier)
  • Manual/auto toggle per invoice
  • $19/mo, 13x cheaper than Churnbuster
  • OAuth setup in 60 seconds
Cons
  • Launched 2026 — no decade of reviews yet
  • Stripe-only (no Braintree/Recurly)
  • No SSO/SAML at entry tier

2. Stunning 7/10

$60/mo Starter · $150/mo Growth · 14-day free trial
Stunning is the best non-AI tool in the category. Well-designed dashboard, reliable template library, supports multiple payment processors. If you're on Stripe + Braintree + Recurly, Stunning is a legitimately good fit — that multi-processor support is a real win that nobody else offers at this tier. Emails feel templated (because they are), but they work.
Pros
  • Multi-processor: Stripe, Braintree, Recurly, Chargify
  • Mature, reliable tool — been around 10+ years
  • Good dashboard UX
  • Works at any scale
Cons
  • Templates only — no AI personalization
  • No pre-dunning
  • $60 entry price 3x more than AI-first competitors

3. Baremetrics Recover 6/10

$129/mo add-on to Baremetrics analytics ($129+/mo base)
Baremetrics Recover is solid if you're already paying for Baremetrics analytics. As a standalone dunning tool it doesn't make economic sense — you're paying $129/mo for analytics you might not need just to get a dunning tool that costs $49 elsewhere. The emails are templated and underwhelming compared to AI tools. Recommendation: skip unless you're already a Baremetrics customer.
Pros
  • Unified with Baremetrics analytics dashboard
  • Good MRR/churn reporting bundled in
  • Established tool with track record
Cons
  • Requires full Baremetrics subscription to use
  • Template-only emails
  • No pre-dunning
  • Expensive if you only want dunning

4. Churnbuster 5/10

$249/mo entry plan · 14-day trial, credit card required
Churnbuster is the brand name in dunning. It also costs 13x more than AI-first tools for roughly the same outcome. You're paying for a decade of case studies and a dedicated CS team. If you're at $500K+ MRR and price genuinely doesn't matter, Churnbuster is a safe, proven choice. For everyone else, it's overpriced. During the test, Churnbuster's recovery sequence was fine but no better than competitors — it just costs more to be fine.
Pros
  • Battle-tested at scale (10+ years, 1,000+ customers)
  • Enterprise features: SSO, dedicated CS
  • Excellent onboarding for larger teams
Cons
  • $249/mo entry price — 13x more than AI alternatives
  • Templates, not AI-generated emails
  • No pre-dunning
  • Credit card required for trial

5. FlyCode n/a · Not reviewable

Book a demo · $500+/mo pricing reported · No self-serve
I tried to sign up. Can't — it's sales-led, enterprise-only. Talked to a sales rep who wouldn't give me pricing without disclosing company size and industry. If you're running a B2B SaaS at $1M+ ARR and want a dedicated account manager, FlyCode might be a fit. For anyone else, it's a non-starter because you can't even evaluate it without a call. Skipping from this review with no score.
Pros
  • Uses AI (so does RecoverKit, for $19)
  • Enterprise features and sophistication
Cons
  • No self-serve signup
  • No published pricing
  • Mandatory demo call to evaluate
  • $500+/mo tier

What I learned

1. AI emails are a real step-change, not marketing fluff. Side-by-side, the AI-generated emails from RecoverKit read noticeably more human than Churnbuster's best templates. Not because the templates are bad — but because templates are the same across every customer, and after 2–3 in a sequence, customers know they're receiving automated emails. AI-generated emails read like a human who happens to also be a capable customer success person wrote them.

2. Pre-dunning is the biggest "moat" feature in the market. Only RecoverKit does it at the entry tier. It eliminates an entire category of failures (expired cards, ~25% of all dunning volume) before they ever hit your recovery funnel. Four of the five tools I tested only react to already-failed payments. That's leaving money on the table.

3. Price correlates weakly with outcome. Churnbuster at $249/mo and Stunning at $60/mo had essentially the same recovery rate in my test. You pay for brand, support, and enterprise features — not for dramatically better recovery.

4. Setup time is under-rated. RecoverKit took 60 seconds. Churnbuster took 15+ minutes plus a scheduled call. If you're a founder, the difference between "set up this afternoon" and "set up next week" is enormous. Fast setup means you start recovering revenue today, not next week.

5. The "book a demo" tools are a red flag. In 2026, any SaaS tool under $1000/mo that doesn't let you self-serve is optimizing for their sales team, not your productivity. FlyCode is a good product built on the wrong business model for most founders.

My recommendation, honestly

For the 95% of SaaS founders reading this:

Yes, I'm biased — but the reasoning is testable. Every tool has free trials. Connect a test Stripe account, run 20 simulated failures through each, read the emails, and pick the one whose output you'd actually want to send to your real customers. That's the test.
